Q&A: This is Fisshu

In five years, I just want to give listeners of my music a place to unwind and a chance to catch their breath.” - Fisshu

It was a pleasure to interview Fisshu recently and to learn more about his beginnings, his musical influences, and what’s next. Below is our interview. Be sure to check out the playlist at the end and support his future musical projects!

How did you come up with your artist name?

My artist name is basically just my last name, Fisher. I have some asian heritage, and "fisshu" is how some languages would pronounce fish in english. It wasn't really thought out that much (Lol).

How did you get into making music?

I've been enamored by music all my life, and played different classical instruments like piano for a long time, but I didn't start producing until late last year. My dad had some left over gear that he wasn't using like an interface and MIDI keyboard, so it wasn't too hard to get started.

Many of your songs deal with nature. How does nature play a role in your music?

Nature compliments ideas and stories, and vice versa. A lot of my inspiration come from a soft meadow or snowy mountains. Even if I am not present in these environments, visualizing them and projecting them into the music is very important. Especially for a genre like lo-fi/chillhop.

One of my favorite songs of yours is "Gazing In Darkness". Can you tell me the story behind that song?

My friend Cultertraz who hails from Jamaica contacted me about working on a song together. The melody for "Gazing In Darkness" is actually quite somber, which I actually enjoy since I don't normally make a lot of moody and dark tracks. A nice change of pace though.

How does Dallas influence your music? As a fellow Texan (I live in Austin), how does this state affect your sound?

I'm not sure Texas has too much of an influence on my music. I love Texas and have been living in it for years but my influences and things that affect my sound come from a plethora of sources, and almost none of them are from where I live.

Who are some of your favorite musicians?

As far as lo-fi musicians go, my favorites that come to mind are WYS, No Spirit, S N U G, Mondo Loops, and Softy.

For non-lofi musicians, I listen to pretty much every genre of music so the list is all over the place. The people I currently enjoy the most range from Liszt and Shostakovich to Polyphia to COIN and Goth Babe. It's a mess.

Where do you see your music career in five years?

In five years, I just want to give listeners of my music a place to unwind and a chance to catch their breath.

What is your next project or single?

My next project is a six track EP conceptually about daydreams.
