Tate McRae - 2 hands

Basic catchy pop.

Ever since her 2023 smash “Greedy”, Tate McRae has been talked about as the next great pop megastar a la her idol Britney Spears. With incredible dance abilities, catchy production and a serviceable voice, she has all of the makings of being a pop star in the 1990s/2000s vein. What’s holding her back unfortunately are boring songs that don’t live up to their far superior visuals. This is can be seen in her latest single “2 hands”, the second single from her upcoming third album “So Close to What”.

These days, a female pop superstar has to either pour their heart into their music (Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey) or have elevated catchy music that’s for the masses (Sabrina Carpenter and Dua Lipa). Tate McRae’s music seems lifeless in comparison to both of these modes of pop music superstardom. She’s a much better performer than Dua or Sabrina, but her music lacks the x factor that you need to build a massive audience.

“2 hands” is pretty catchy and Tate sounds like her usual nasally self on the track. Perhaps its her monotone voice that throws me off? Hearing someone so listless really takes away any insights that the lyrics may bring. After listening to the song for the third time, I still had no idea what the song was about. Maybe that’s the point.
