Sky Ferreira - Leash

A long-awaited comeback.

Let’s get this out of the way first. Sky Ferreira’s new single “Leash” off of the “Babygirl” movie soundtrack is an excellent return to form for an artist that has barely released any music in the last decade. It sounds like much of the best work from her enduring 2013 debut “Night Time, My Time”, making it feel like she never left. Her voice has matured over the years and has a huskier, richer tone throughout the track. The electro-rock banger is sure to please the ears of her devoted fans and instantly transport them back to their Tumblr days.

Fresh from being dropped from Capitol Records, Sky is now free to either sign to another major label or release music as an independent artist. Whenever an album is delayed for so many years, you have to wonder how much of it is because of label politics and how much of it is the lack of dedication from said artist. In many cases, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

What is undeniable is that Sky has a cult fanbase that is anxious for her long-awaited second LP “Masochism”. Where she goes from here is up to her and I’m cautiously optimistic that she won’t disappear for years again. May this be the start of something big rather than a flash of brilliance before another hiatus.
