Khalid – ‘Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me’
A pop prodigy grows up.
With nearly 53 million monthly Spotify listeners, it is hard to say that Khalid is an underdog. But after a couple years of false starts and stops, it seems that a lot is riding on his R&B comeback single ‘Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me’. The song is a beautiful post-breakup track about not being able to fully let go of an ex even though you know that’s what you need to do. Millennial listeners will instantly recognize the interpolation of the 2009 Alicia Keys classic ‘Un-Thinkable (I'm Ready)’ in the beginning. With Khalid’s trademark mellow vocals and the calming production, this is a perfect song to listen to while driving late at night.
While Khalid’s music has often been derided as Spotify-core and mere background music, his distinct voice really elevates him over the other downtempo pop/R&B singers out there. From his wonderful 2017 debut ‘American Teen’ to the uneven 2019 album ‘Free Spirit’ to the chill R&B vibes of 2021’s ‘Scenic Drive’ (my personal favorite project of his), it’s clear that Khalid’s approach to maturity is to slow the tempo down and move more towards the R&B genre rather than stay in the pop-soul lane.
It has been five long years since his last LP, but it seems that Khalid is finally back in a big way. ‘Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me’ serves as a possible preview of his long-awaited upcoming album ‘Everything Is Changing’. The new album title alone signals an emotional maturity that many of us experienced or will experience as we hit our quarter-life crisis. In the meantime, check out the emotional visualizer to ‘Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me’ below.
