Q&A: This is Lakiloop
“Nature has a profound impact on my music. The tranquility and beauty of natural settings often find their way into my compositions. It's a way for me to connect with the world and convey the peaceful, introspective feelings that Lofi music is known for.” - Lakiloop
I first discovered Lakiloop’s music while looking for tunes for my summer music playlists. His music evokes the beach and good vibes. Below is our interview where we discuss his musical beginnings, “The Alchemist”, his future EP and an ideal week in Germany! How did you get started making music? Do you come from a musical family?
I've always been drawn to music, but I didn't come from a musical family. My musical odyssey commenced when, at the age of 14, I joined a school band as a guitarist. As the years went by, I had the privilege of collaborating with renowned reggae artists and working as a studio guitarist, which eventually allowed me to become a fully self-employed musician. Throughout this journey, my fascination with experimenting with various sounds and melodies grew into a burning passion. This passion ultimately guided me towards the path of becoming a Lofi music producer.
I've encountered many German lofi musicians. Why does the country produce so many great musicians in this genre?
Germany has a rich history of embracing diverse music styles and cultures. This openness to different influences and the thriving arts scene here provide a fertile ground for musicians to explore and innovate. Additionally, Germany's breathtaking landscapes and changing seasons often serve as a wellspring of inspiration for Lofi artists like myself.
Many of your songs are about nature. How does that influence your music?
Nature has a profound impact on my music. The tranquility and beauty of natural settings often find their way into my compositions. It's a way for me to connect with the world and convey the peaceful, introspective feelings that Lofi music is known for.
A song of yours I love is "Salty Air". Can you talk about the making of it?
"Salty Air" is a special track for me. I found inspiration during a surf trip along Portugal's Atlantic coast in our VW Bulli. This piece blends beautiful guitar and piano notes with self-recorded background sounds from the trip. It's also my first successful release with the label "Yawn," which handled the artwork and promotion brilliantly.
So far, you've released standalone singles. Do you have any plans to release an EP or album in the near future?
Absolutely! I've currently started working on an EP that will expand on the themes and moods I've explored in my singles. It's an exciting project that I hope will offer a more comprehensive experience of my music.
I've never been to Germany before. If I had one week to spend there, where should I go?
For one week I would start in the enchanting Black Forest, I'd hike through dense forests, visit serene lakes, and embrace the charm of the region. From there, I'd venture to Munich, where I'd explore the Bavarian beer scene, sampling traditional brews in historic beer halls. Next, I'd journey to the Bavarian Alps, surrounded by stunning mountain vistas and pristine lakes. A visit to Neuschwanstein Castle would allow me to soak up the natural beauty of this area. Finally, I'd conclude my trip in Cologne, where I'd savor Kölsch beer and unwind along the Rhine River, appreciating the scenic views.
Where do you see your career in five years?
In five years, I hope to have reached a wider global audience with my music. I aspire to collaborate with other talented artists and continue evolving as a producer. Ultimately, my goal is to create music that resonates deeply with people and brings moments of calm to their lives. Of course, if this becomes a regular source of income, that would make me very happy as well.
If you were stuck on an island and could only have one book to read, what would it be?
That's a tough choice, but I'd probably choose "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. Its themes of following one's dreams and finding purpose resonate with me, and it would provide inspiration during those solitary moments on the island.
