“Parking Lot”: An exclusive interview with Fisshu
It was a pleasure to recently interview Fisshu for the second time! Earlier this month, he released his incredible new album “Parking Lot” and I’ve been listening to it ever since! We discuss the making of the album, our favorite songs from the project, common themes throughout the album and so much more! Be sure to check out the new album at the end and continue to support his future work!
Why did you name your new album “Parking Lot”?
A parking lot is a seemingly common and insignificant piece of land to simply house cars. In my experience, it has been much more than that. Some of my most prominent memories with my friends regarding social interactions have been in parking lots in front of a Chick-fil-A or Walmart, etc. This album is a reflection of that and the emotions that are explored in those experiences.
What was the inspiration behind why you decided to make this project?
Lofi/chillhop has always seemed to have room for music with a certain wistfullness. There are many tracks in the sub-genre that deal in themes of looking back, rememberance, and restfulness. "Parking Lot" and the themes I attempt to capture seemed like a perfect fit.
Is there a particular mood or feeling you want the listener to get from listening to the new album?
I wanted this album to feel uplifting with a touch of melancholy. Hopefully pure vibes too.
Did the process of making this album differ from previous projects?
There was too much of a difference between this project and the last, but I definitely wanted this one to be more cohesive and consistent than the last.
What is your favorite song on the album and why? My favorite track is “Truck Bed” by the way!
My favorite off the album is Starlight. It's a great closer to the album and I had a lot of fun playing around with different reverbs. I wanted to see how much space I could put in a track while also keeping it grounded in the central themes of the entire project.
You design your own cover artwork! What was the process like to make the cover artwork for “Parking Lot”?
My first thought was to paint an empty parking lot with one street light turned on in the middle, but that seemed more eerie than it was calming and wistful. Most of my landscape and background art has an emphasis on the sky and its colors, which I took the liberty of carrying on.
Do you have any upcoming projects for 2024 we can look forward to?
I've got a single being released that sounds more lofi hip hop on May 3rd, a single in June, and another in July. Already working on a new EP and full length album hopefully to be released in the fall and winter of this year.
